How to Maintain that Sustainable
Feeling Good
Maintaining that ‘sustainable feeling good’ as a way of life
involves our daily thoughts and actions. Think of all the activities
in your life as a string of 150 twinkling holiday lights. When just
one of those little lights goes out the whole string stops
performing brilliantly. It’s similar in our lives. When just one
area is out of whack we stop performing at our peak. As you prepare
for success in 2005, here’s an overview of the habits I’ve
determined to be most beneficial in getting to and enjoying that
sustainable feeling good:
Step 1. Trusting yourself to do what you know is right.
Commitment: Make a commitment to yourself to trust that you
know what is right.
- Courage: Take small risks to build up your self trust and
confidence for bold actions.
- Challenges: Look for any upside to the situation and
choose a more positive way of thinking about it and handling it.
- Issues: Don’t let them mull over in your mind. Write them
on a list & handle one at a time. Start now before the New Year!
- Interactions: Don’t’ personalize and always tell the
truth. Always.
- Worry: A waste of time. Adopt the philosophy of ‘let it
go’ if it is inconsequential or take some action.
- Feelings: Learn to trust that your feelings are valid
indicators as to what is true for you.
- Step 2. Getting clear on your priorities.
Health: Take good care daily…when we don’t feel well it’s
challenging to do anything.
- Family: Seize moments throughout the day to talk and
connect (think quality rather than quantity).
- Friends: Choose friends who are encouraging and
supportive people.
- Contribution/Work: Feel good about the difference you are
making or make a career change.
- Beliefs: Connect to your belief system for greater peace
of mind.
- Fun: Take time to relax, enjoy and play during this go-go
Holiday time!
Step 3. Creating systems & processes.
- Business: Make a plan (a simple one page will do) and
commit to work it step by step.
- Physical Activity: Not a luxury, it’s a well being must!
3 times per week…it takes away stress and gives you energy.
- Sleep: When you wake at 3am with your mind
overflowing…roll over and write the stuff down. Get it out of your
head and go back to sleep!
- Nutrition: Eat more healthy foods (yes, fruits & veggies)
and take vitamins/supplements daily.
- Morning routine: Set aside a few minutes for stretches
and to mentally set up your day.
- Right Now: Learn to live in the present moment with a
focus on what is right in front of you.
When I allocate snippets of time for the above actions my days go
more smoothly, I’m clear headed, achieving results, handling issues
with ease and people tell me that there’s a sparkle in my eye! What’s
interesting is that we are the only ones who can help ourselves to
feel this way. What one idea will you select today? Make taking small
daily actions that contribute to your feeling good a special holiday
gift that you give yourself this Holiday Season!
- Is the person challenged by my way of thinking or doing business?
- What can I learn from the comments?
- How can I use the information to better myself or the issue?
- What actions will I take as a result of the information?
Logic prevailed and she was back to focusing on the issues and not
her emotional response!
Having a logical method to process feedback is valuable. Really! Next
time you get some challenging feedback (and we all do from time to time)
ask yourself these objective questions. You’ll also benefit from this
proactive, non-personal approach.
